Mychal's Learning Center was the recipient of a Mars Air Curtain to help them meet regulatory compliance in their food prep areas. Mychal's provides children & adults with developmental disabilities opportunities that build self-esteem & independence, creating long term success for life. Mykie’s (Formerly known as Howl at the Moon Café) by Mychal’s Learning Place, provides coffee and baked goods for community events and private catering. All of our bakers and baristas are young adults with developmental disabilities, demonstrating that they are talented and able contributors to our community and can participate in a Coffee Program and/or Bakery Program. In the Coffee Program students start as “baristas in training”, receiving extensive training in espresso drink making, customer service, cashier training, and health and sanitation. Students earn their California Food Handler’s Certification during the training. Upon completion of the program, students are offered an interview that can lead to part time employment. In the Bakery Program, students learn how to read recipes, use accurate measurements, and make homemade baked goods as they learn about kitchen and health safety and earn their California Food Handler’s Certification.
Mykie’s is so much more than a coffee and baked good service. When you buy a cup of coffee from Mykie’s, you are supporting job training and employment for people with developmental disabilities in our community. Mykie’s wants to change society’s perception about people with developmental disabilities, one cup of coffee at a time.
